President's Park
Williamsburg, VA
My interest lied in the fact
I'd seen a couple of the giant heads earlier and wondered what the
controversy was all about. I learned that it was about a man,
David Adickes, who had a dream to create his own Mount Rushmore of
sorts, but one people could touch unlike the mountainside
megaliths that reside in South Dakota. And he would include more
of the Presidents. Formerly a painter and then with more focus as
a Sculptor, Mr. Adickes, made some of the sculptures and they were
delivered to a motel in Virginia, who planned to use them as an
attraction of sorts. But Adickes had a dream to build a park for them. City officials didn't take to the big heads ... they called them "tacky"
and raised a giant ruckus because the motel owner did not have proper
permits. More controversy developed when big heads turned up
in several places, including Buena Vista
and Norfolk Botanical Gardens as well as Texas
(where they were created) and rumor has it, South Dakota. I've found no truth
to the South Dakota story, but it's possible as Mount Rushmore is
located there. It seemed no one wanted these heads and
there was no formality or completeness to their display. They were
just dropped "wherever" and "whenever." People were intrigued and
mystified and that's how they ended up as part of pop culture folklore.
That is until a man with a dream, did build a park in Williamsburg, VA
and set forth to display the heads. All that had been made and then
eventually, more, to complete the set. I talked with the
curator/visioneer of the park and he
was nice to the patron and his dedication to the park shows. He
told me that Mr. Adickes is now 77 years old (as of 2005) and as long as he's alive,
he'll make future heads when new Presidents are elected.
Park Information: Hours:
April – August 10 a.m. – 8
p.m.
September – March 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day Admission Price: Adults: $9.75
Senior Citizens (55+) and Military $8.75
Children (6 – 17) $6.50 Location:
211Water Country Parkway
Williamsburg, VA 23185
There
is a small concession area, a gift shop and bathrooms. Soda
Machine outside and a Gazebo to sit at half way through. Other
than that, there is nothing else to see. Parking is free.
Other than looking at the big heads, the only thing to do is to read the
information signs. They are worth reading; though I've put some
information on here, there is other inforamtion like Salary, Education,
Political Parties, Military experience, Jobs held before elected,
Religious Affiliations, Quotes, what states were admitted into the union
during their presidencies, Specific achievements while in office, and
other fun tidbits. I recommend good walking shoes and bottled
water during hot days. There is a guided tour available, but I
recommend doing it yourself. Takes about 2 hours to read all the
material and walk through if you go at a medium pace. I saw some people
go through in 20 minutes because they expected more and weren't
interested in reading. Continue reading after the photos for interesting
Presidential facts.
